Giles Goddard shares an insight into his new book Exploring Spirit: Finding What Matters in a Broken World.

What inspired you to write Exploring Spirit: Finding What Matters in a Broken World?
I wanted to create something I could give to the many people who come to St John’s, Waterloo seeking a deeper sense of meaning and purpose. I also wanted to say more about the ideas and vision which underpin my last book, Generous Faith.

Describe the book in three words:
Inspiring. Urgent. Heartfelt.

What question sits at the heart of Exploring Spirit?
How can love be a real force for good in our lives and the lives of others?

Who do you hope will find this book most helpful?
Anyone who’s interested to discover more about what it means to be a spiritual person, and wants to explore the rich tradition of spiritual thinkers and writers who have inspired so many.

What surprised you most while you were writing?
How many resonances there are between different religious traditions’ approach to spirituality. We can learn from all of them.

What’s your favourite quote from the book?
“The challenge we all face is to learn how to embrace desire so that it helps us, and the people we love, to flourish. To learn how to let the spirit and the body grow together. To embrace an impure purity which is truly life-giving.”

How do you hope readers will feel after finishing the book?
I hope that readers will be inspired to explore their spiritual journey more deeply.

Exploring Spirit: Finding What Matters in a Broken World, published by Canterbury Press, is available from 26 February 2026.
