Churchyard garden

St John’s churchyard garden welcomes hundreds of people a day including local residents, dog walkers, students and office workers taking lunch breaks, commuters going to and from Waterloo Station and passers-by who step in from the street to find themselves in an unexpected oasis of calm. It’s also a place where homeless people spend time, where students with special needs learn horticulture skills and during the annual Waterloo Festival it’s the setting for exhibitions, jazz concerts and community tea parties.

Santa Pedone is our Community Gardner. Santa runs a team of regular volunteers and gives work experience to special needs students learning horticulture skills. “I’m here to give people the opportunity to learn about gardening and the natural environment as part of a team.”

We are very aware of global warming and are choosing our plants to be drought tolerant and nectar rich for pollinators. This has a positive effect on the look and feel of the garden.  You can sit in the shade of our huge walnut trees, or you can wander in our shady topiary garden and see our two beautiful cork trees that we grew from seed. We have fragrant flowering shrubs in season, and a herbaceous border that will be completely replanted when St John’s reopens after its major restoration. Our Garden of Remembrance is tucked amongst borders of interesting exotic shrubs, alongside a wildlife garden.
