SUMMARY:Parish Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Our main service of the week is at 10.30am every Sunday and lasts just over an hour. We worship in the liberal anglo-Catholic tradition\, using liturgy from Common Worship\, often adapted to emphasise our desire to welcome all God’s people. Our congregation is very diverse in every way\, and we have a lovely mixture of people who’ve been coming to St John’s for decades\, people passing through\, and everything in between. We hope that whether you can join us for one week or many years you will feel very welcome. \nWe sing traditional and modern hymns supported by our choir. There are activity bags for younger children\, and we have a children’s church session on the first Sunday of every month for young people from about 8 to 15. We have tea\, coffee and cake or biscuits afterwards. \nYou can download the service sheet – which contains all the latest notices as well as the liturgy and hymns for each week here. \n

SUMMARY:Open Table Service
DESCRIPTION:A safe\, affirming LGBTQIA+ community at St John’s Waterloo. The service is once a month\, on the second Sunday\, 6pm. \n  \nOpen table\, is a service run by and for LGBTQIA+ people\, their friends and families. We welcome people of any faith\, colour or background. We welcome people of every gender identity and sexual orientation. We usually have an informal Eucharist service\, with a short reflection\, and hymns or songs\, followed by tea and cake (or sometimes wine and snacks) as we chat and get to know one another. \n  \nWe find God and each other in our gatherings\, and that gives us time and peace to grow. \n  \nFor more information email\, opentable@stjohnswaterloo.org.uk.

The building also houses the NT Studio and the Black Plays Archive.\n4th August: Lambeth Legends: Past & Present\, Who are our local heroes (… and villians?!) Let’s learn about well known historical figures\, lesser known important activists and a certain Lambeth MP all of whom have their names remembered in and around this area of Lambeth.\n11th August: Lambeth Lore: Past & Present\, What are the local stories that don’t feature in the history books? How do the people of Lambeth leave their mark on the landscape? Let’s have a look for lovelocks\, ritual litter and a ‘legal wall…’\n18th August: Waterloo: the end of the line!\, Another transport trek – let’s go and look for some original terminus stations\, find a stabled tube train in a mini-depot\, hear about the history of the bus network in London and a departure point for 200\,000 people … who never returned!\n25th August\, The Greening of Waterloo\, London is the second greenest city in the world and Lambeth plays a large part in that as the first council to declare a Climate Emergency in 2019. He became a Lambeth Guide in 2023 and is a published author with a blog – lambethfantastical.blogspot.com.\n9th June: Arrivals\, From the mid twentieth century emigres to new kids on the block we’ll look at recent additions to the BFI\, the new builds on the South Bank and introduce the leading ladies at the helm of the National Theatre and Young Vic.\n16th June: Housing Stories\, Away from the vibrant riverside\, the cultural cluster and transport hub is a rich history of local communities. We’ll explore an early 19th century estate\, see the impact of an American banker and discover housing where everyone lives in a tree – and more. \nAbout The Bridge At Waterloo:\nThe Bridge At Waterloo is a secular charity located at and founded by St John’s Waterloo. Through its historic building\, staff\, volunteers and in partnership with its neighbourhood and other organisations\, TBAW promotes community engagement\, the arts\, and horticulture to encourage social justice\, communal involvement\, inclusivity\, and environmental responsibility. Payment must be made by phone or app\, details can be found on signs along Exton Street. After 6.30pm (1pm on Saturday) parking is free within the bays and on single yellow lines. Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms is the centrepiece\, alongside works by Aaron Copland\, Samuel Barber\, Ned Rorem\, and Undine Smith Moore. \nTickets here. \nSummer Sings 2026\nSummer Sings brings choral singers together to explore and enjoy music during the long summer break between choir terms. Led by David Wordsworth\, an internationally sought-after musician\, writer\, and conductor\, these workshops span traditional and contemporary classical music and\, wherever possible\, feature living composers or their representatives. Following the success of last year’s season of Summer Sings\, David has arranged a new series of evening events at St John’s Waterloo\, London – the church of the Festival of Britain\, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary. Payment must be made by phone or app\, details can be found on signs along Exton Street. After 6.30pm (1pm on Saturday) parking is free within the bays and on single yellow lines. DESCRIPTION:Summer Sings 2026: William Mathias and more\nThursday 20th August 2026\, 7:00pm to 9:30pm (doors open at 6:45pm)\nSt John’s Waterloo\nExploring works by Welsh composer William Mathias (1934–1992)\, who wrote the anthem Let the People Praise Thee\, O God for the 1981 royal wedding; it will feature in this evening’s programme. Our guest\, his daughter Dr Rhiannon Mathias\, will speak about her father’s music. The evening will also include music by Vaughan Williams\, Grace Williams\, and Dominic McGonigal. Grace Williams\, another notable Welsh composer\, was the first British woman to score a feature film. \nTickets here. \nSummer Sings 2026\nSummer Sings brings choral singers together to explore and enjoy music during the long summer break between choir terms. Led by David Wordsworth\, an internationally sought-after musician\, writer\, and conductor\, these workshops span traditional and contemporary classical music and\, wherever possible\, feature living composers or their representatives. Following the success of last year’s season of Summer Sings\, David has arranged a new series of evening events at St John’s Waterloo\, London – the church of the Festival of Britain\, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary. SUMMARY:Parish Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Our main service of the week is at 10.30am every Sunday and lasts just over an hour. We worship in the liberal anglo-Catholic tradition\, using liturgy from Common Worship\, often adapted to emphasise our desire to welcome all God’s people. Our congregation is very diverse in every way\, and we have a lovely mixture of people who’ve been coming to St John’s for decades\, people passing through\, and everything in between. We hope that whether you can join us for one week or many years you will feel very welcome. \nWe sing traditional and modern hymns supported by our choir. There are activity bags for younger children\, and we have a children’s church session on the first Sunday of every month for young people from about 8 to 15. We have tea\, coffee and cake or biscuits afterwards. \nYou can download the service sheet – which contains all the latest notices as well as the liturgy and hymns for each week here. \n

Parking is available in Exton Street on pay bays\, Monday to Friday from 8.30am till 6.30pm & Saturday 8.30am till 1.30pm. Payment must be made by phone or app\, details can be found on signs along Exton Street. After 6.30pm (1pm on Saturday) parking is free within the bays and on single yellow lines. There are no disabled bays along Exton Street. Parking is also available in car parks in York Road and Cornwall Road\, details for both can be found online. \nSt John’s Waterloo

DESCRIPTION:Question Time\n  \nThe fourth or last Tuesday of the month\, 6pm – 7.30pm in a local cafe -Ev\, SE1 8DD. \nQuestion Time is a monthly meet up to talk about some of the big questions of life and faith.\nWe’ll be exploring these questions from a Christian perspective using the Bible to navigate some of our thinking\, but people of any faith and none are most welcome. We don’t assume to have the answer\, but to give space for exploration and to learn and grow from one another.\nQuestion time is run by our 20s and 30s group\, but open to all!\nWe meet at Ev Cafe\, SE1 8DD\, 6pm – 7.30pm on the last Tuesday of the month. DESCRIPTION:Summer Sings 2026: Festival of Britain at 75\nThursday 27th August 2026\, 7:00pm to 9:30pm (doors open at 6:45pm)\nSt John’s Waterloo\nCelebrating the 75th anniversary of the Festival of Britain at the Festival Church\, the programme features music sung by choirs invited to perform Evensong at St John’s in 1951\, including works by Stanford\, Bairstow\, S S Wesley (organist at St John’s\, 1829–30)\, Charles Wood\, Holst\, and others. \nTickets here. \nSummer Sings 2026\nSummer Sings brings choral singers together to explore and enjoy music during the long summer break between choir terms. Led by David Wordsworth\, an internationally sought-after musician\, writer\, and conductor\, these workshops span traditional and contemporary classical music and\, wherever possible\, feature living composers or their representatives. Following the success of last year’s season of Summer Sings\, David has arranged a new series of evening events at St John’s Waterloo\, London – the church of the Festival of Britain\, which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary.
